As a result of the natural aging process, our facial features may begin to change in ways we aren’t happy with. For example, the chin and cheeks that were once sculpted and contoured, may lose definition as collagen and fat volume in the face diminishes.
Similarly, an angular jaw line may be replaced with a double chin, as a loss of elasticity causes the face to droop downwards. Understandably, these changes can be very discouraging and often have a negative impact on an individual’s self-esteem. Luckily, a Toronto facelift can treat multiple signs of facial aging with just one procedure.
A Toronto facelift, or rhytidectomy, is a facial rejuvenation procedure designed to treat a variety of concerns such as loose, excess tissue, sagging skin, and wrinkles. This multi-tasking surgery can successfully accomplish the following goals:
Restore fullness to the cheeks: While in our youth, our cheekbones tend to be round and well defined, over time, this fullness is lost as a result of a reduction in the fat pads beneath the skin. This loss of fat can be incredibly aging. In addition, the superficial muscles that support high, round cheeks are impacted by an increase in laxity, which often causes the cheeks to droop. These undesirable changes can be corrected with a facelift, which tightens lax muscles to provide the underlying tissues with greater support. Depending on the patient’s needs and goals, this procedure may also be combined with fat injections or dermal fillers to add greater volume to the cheeks, helping to restore their fullness.
Eradicate jowls: While most patients have a sharp, defined jaw line for much of their youth, the aforementioned loss of volume in the cheeks can gradually impact the lower half of the face, including the jaw. As a result, jowls, or drooping pockets of fat, can develop along the jaw line. In many cases, jowls become more pronounced with age, which can be incredibly bothersome for many patients. Thankfully, a facelift can eradicate unsightly jowls by tightening the mid-face and restoring definition to the jaw line.
Eliminate double chin: As a result of a loss of elasticity in the face, many individuals begin to notice the development of a double chin. In our youth, the chin’s curvature tends to be smooth and angled, however, the skin on the chin and neck loosens over time, which can cause these areas to lose definition. A facelift works to tighten the superficial muscles on the face, which can provide improved definition to the chin, eliminating the double chin and enhancing the appearance of the neck.
