MEDPOR Chin Implant

Solomon Facial Plastic Surgery is best known for Facial Cosmetic surgical procedures, including Chin Implant surgery in Toronto, Canada. Chin implant surgery also known as Chin Augmentation, can be a transformative surgery, dramatically improving facial proportions and facial harmony. A recessed or ‘weak chin’ can be altered in Facial Cosmetic Surgery with chin implant surgery using a Silicone or Medpor implant.

Both men and women can be affected by a recessive chin due to genetic factors. A small chin can also become more obvious with the ageing process. Those as young as 20 years-of-age may be a candidate for a chin implant once bones have fully matured. Chin implants offer the option of restructuring the face for improved facial balance and a more aesthetically attractive facial appearance.

At Solomon Facial Plastic, options for chin implant surgery include both Silicone and Medpor Implants. While both types of implants can achieve great results, choosing the right implant for you is best determined in consultation with Dr. Solomon. A patient’s aesthetic goal, facial structure and lifestyle, all play a role in determining the best implant material for chin augmentation surgery.

Silicone implants are the most common implant as they are relatively straightforward and easy to implant and are available in many shapes and sizes. These implants can achieve significant results and are a ‘one-piece’ solid silicone implant that have a high safety record. If needed, these implants are relatively easy to remove or replace and are also less expensive than their counterpart Medpor implant. Surgery for this implant can take approximately 30 to 45 minutes in length under general aesthesia, but can also be provided under local anesthesia in certain cases. Recovery at home can take up to 10 days with swelling lasting anywhere from 2 weeks up to 3 months.

Silicone chin implant surgery requires a small incision under the chin, with the implant being placed directly on to the bone. Dr. Solomon prefers this method of implantation, as it allows for more accurate placement with a lower risk of infection, opposed to placing the implant through the mouth; however, both techniques are an option.

Medpor implants are commonly used for patients who have moderate to severe retraction of the chin; those with a short mandible and for those who have previously undergone orthognathic surgery to improve maxillary mandibular proportions yet still require further chin augmentation.

Dr. Philip Solomon, a specialist in Facial Cosmetic Surgery in Toronto for over 20 years, is an expert in Medpor implantation. Dr. Solomon says “Medpor implants are customizable, proven safe, and are the most secure implants available as they are fixated by titanium bone screws to help prevent dislocation or movement rarely seen with silicone implants.” This method of implantation also allows for the chin to be placed on the anterior edge of the mandible, elongating the face or sharpening the chin.

How MEDPOR Chin Implant Is Made?

Medpor implants are made from biocompatible polyethylene, a material that is quite porous therefore enabling tissue to grow through it, providing a very natural result while also minimizing the risk of infection or rejection of the implant. Unlike Silicone Implants that are a one-piece solution for chin augmentation, Medpor implants are designed to forma a U-shape, using two-pieces to better conform with the facial skeleton. One-piece button implants are also an option available and suitable for certain patients.

Medpor implants can be performed after orthognathic surgery to improve upon results, or as an alternative to orthognathic surgery, depending on the cicrumstances.

While we offer both Silicone and Medpor implants at Solomon Facial Plastic, in some cases Medpor is preferred. Such is the case in patients who have undergone orthognathic surgery and are left with an asymmetrical or irregular surface of the mandible. Other reasons for choosing a Medpor implant is the need for fixation or in cases where elongation of the mandible is required.

Surgery for a Medpor implant typically takes an hour with a recovery period of 7-10 days. Much like Silicone implants, Medpor implants are inserted through a small incision under the chin or an intra-oral incision. Dr. Solomon will determine which approach is most ideal for your individual case.

Chin implants are often performed alone or in combination with rhinoplasty, neck liposuction, and facelift surgery. Utilizing chin implants in combination with these procedures can create the most dramatic yet natural appearing outcomes from cosmetic facial surgery.

Finally, for patients who are not ready for chin implant surgery, facial fillers can be a temporary method of chin augmentation. At Solomon Facial Plastics we use a number of filler products for chin augmentation. In certain cases, Dr. Solomon can inject a long-lasting filler such as Bellafill, for results lasting up to five years.
