MEDPOR Chin Implant
Solomon Facial Plastic Surgery is best known for Facial Cosmetic surgical procedures, including Chin Implant surgery in Toronto, Canada. Chin implant surgery also known as Chin Augmentation, can be a transformative surgery, dramatically improving facial proportions and facial harmony. A recessed or ‘weak chin’ can be altered in Facial Cosmetic Surgery with chin implant surgery using a Silicone or Medpor implant.
Both men and women can be affected by a recessive chin due to genetic factors. A small chin can also become more obvious with the ageing process. Those as young as 20 years-of-age may be a candidate for a chin implant once bones have fully matured. Chin implants offer the option of restructuring the face for improved facial balance and a more aesthetically attractive facial appearance.
At Solomon Facial Plastic, options for chin implant surgery include both Silicone and Medpor Implants. While both types of implants can achieve great results, choosing the right implant for you is best determined in consultation with Dr. Solomon. A patient’s aesthetic goal, facial structure and lifestyle, all play a role in determining the best implant material for chin augmentation surgery.
SILICONE IMPLANT OR MEDPOR?
Silicone implants are the most common implant as they are relatively straightforward and easy to implant and are available in many shapes and sizes. These implants can achieve significant results and are a ‘one-piece’ solid silicone implant that have a high safety record. If needed, these implants are relatively easy to remove or replace and are also less expensive than their counterpart Medpor implant. Surgery for this implant can take approximately 30 to 45 minutes in length under general aesthesia, but can also be provided under local anesthesia in certain cases. Recovery at home can take up to 10 days with swelling lasting anywhere from 2 weeks up to 3 months.
Silicone chin implant surgery requires a small incision under the chin, with the implant being placed directly on to the bone. Dr. Solomon prefers this method of implantation, as it allows for more accurate placement with a lower risk of infection, opposed to placing the implant through the mouth; however, both techniques are an option.
Medpor implants are commonly used for patients who have moderate to severe retraction of the chin; those with a short mandible and for those who have previously undergone orthognathic surgery to improve maxillary mandibular proportions yet still require further chin augmentation.
Dr. Philip Solomon, a specialist in Facial Cosmetic Surgery in Toronto for over 20 years, is an expert in Medpor implantation. Dr. Solomon says “Medpor implants are customizable, proven safe, and are the most secure implants available as they are fixated by titanium bone screws to help prevent dislocation or movement rarely seen with silicone implants.” This method of implantation also allows for the chin to be placed on the anterior edge of the mandible, elongating the face or sharpening the chin.
