About Neck Liposuction

Many factors such as genetics, age or weight gain can cause certain areas of the body to start accumulating fat. This is unavoidable regardless of how healthy a person is, or how much they focus on diet and exercise. One area in which fatty deposits tend to accumulate for some men and women is the neck, causing them to look heavier and older than they are. People who are seeing this accumulation of fat happening to them, might be dismayed at this seemingly permanent change that results in a change of shape in the neck and chin. There are procedures other than a neck lift or face lift that can restore your appearance, improve your profile and regain your self-confidence.

What Is Neck Liposuction?

Liposuction of the neck is a common neck contouring procedure that has produced excellent results for many patients. You may already know that liposuction is a type of cosmetic surgery that removes fat from specific areas, resulting in a more streamlined, contoured look.

Not many people are aware, though, that liposuction can be performed on the neck in order to give it a pleasing, contoured look that offers an individual a smooth, defined neck that enhances their facial features and restores their youthful appearance.

Neck LiposuctionCan Neck Liposuction Be Combined With Other Procedures?

People often schedule a neck liposuction to be done in conjunction with other procedures, including a neck lift, a facelift, a chin augmentation, a rhinoplasty or a brow lift in order to provide a substantial rebalancing of their facial features.

Am I A Good Candidate For Neck Liposuction?

Neck Liposuction works best on patients with firm, elastic skin. Patients should also be at an ideal, sustainable weight. While the most common age for patients receiving neck liposuction is between 30-50, people have elected to get liposuction on their necks as young as 20 and up to the age of 60. Though this procedure is performed frequently, not everyone is a suitable candidate for neck liposuction.

Neck Liposuction

Neck LiposuctionIn general, neck liposuction works best when the patient wants to get rid of a double chin or reduce the full look of the under-chin area. Neck liposuction also works well when the patient wants to refine their jawline in order to make their facial features appear more balanced. The results are usually permanent, although the patient must maintain a stable weight after the surgery. While liposuction is not a substitute for a proper diet and exercise, it can help eliminate stubborn pockets of fat that remain even after weight loss.

Patients who opt for neck liposuction need to be healthy physically and mentally. Patients who have heart disease, lung disease, diabetes, poor blood circulation or have had previous surgery around the neck and chin may be considered riskier than others. However, patients also need to be psychologically stable and make sure their expectations are realistic. The skin needs to be relatively firm as well. While neck liposuction can alter a patient’s appearance, sometimes drastically, it cannot completely change the overall appearance and some patients do choose to combine procedures in order to achieve the best possible aesthetic result.

Are There Any Risks With Neck Liposuction?

As with all procedures, neck liposuction does present some risks. Among the potential risks of neck liposuction is the potential for an irregular procedure, which can result in “ruffles” under the neck, or the potential for nerve damage, which may lead to an irregular smile. The neck may also be over-suctioned, resulting in a divot. While these risks might be concerning, it is worth pointing out that neck liposuction is one of the most common facial cosmetic surgery procedures, and in the hands of a highly skilled and experienced surgeon, your chances of complication are greatly minimized. The procedure itself only takes about 30 minutes to complete.

Mistakes are generally uncommon, and can certainly be minimized when the procedure is done by a knowledgeable and experienced surgeon such as Dr. Philip Solomon, Otolaryngologist Head and Neck Surgeon practicing Facial Plastic Surgery, who has nearly 20 years of experience as well advanced training in this procedure. The level of success with neck liposuction is often dependent on which aspect of a candidate’s neck are most prominent.

The First Steps To Achieving A Contoured Neck

When you meet with Dr. Solomon, he will work with you and listen to your unique, aesthetic goals. He will review the available options with you in order to improve your neck contour. Dr. Solomon takes an individualized approach with each and every one of his patients. Dr. Solomon will take photographs of your neck and examine them thoroughly with an eye towards achieving your goals. He will also evaluate your overall health and your medical history to discover any pre-existing health conditions that may impact your neck liposuction procedure. Once this is done, he will recommend a course of treatment and discuss in detail with you how that treatment will help you to achieve the goals you have for your appearance. Depending on your goals, he may also offer other procedures that may be more beneficial for you in order to achieve the desired results you want.

Remember to discuss exactly what your goals are, and be sure to address any concerns you may have regarding this procedure. Dr. Solomon will be happy to listen to any questions you may have, and he will be more than happy to give you all the information you need so that you can make an educated decision that is right for you.

Once you have decided on a facial cosmetic procedure, Dr. Solomon will give you very specific instructions concerning what you should do to prepare. There may be specific tests needed prior to the procedure such as blood tests to ensure your safety. You should also avoid taking any anti-inflammatory drugs, including aspirin and herbal supplements that thin the blood as they may increase bleeding during the surgery. In order to ensure the safety of all his patients and to obtain the best possible outcome and support the healing process the preparation instructions should be followed.

This is also a good time to start preparing for your post-surgery recovery. Make sure you have a friend or family member to drive you to the surgery and take you home afterward. You may also need to arrange for someone to come check on you for the first day or two after your neck liposuction.

The Neck Liposuction Procedure

Since neck liposuction is a very common cosmetic surgery procedure, it does not have to be performed in a hospital and can be performed in Dr. Solomon’s private and state-of-the-art surgery centre, The Solomon Nasal and Facial Plastic Surgery centre, in Thornhill, just minutes north of Toronto.

In either situation, only local anesthesia is required. However, if you wish to be sedated for the procedure, please bring this up to Dr. Solomon during the initial consultation.

During the procedure, a tiny incision is made under the chin and in front of the ears. Then a spoke wheel pattern is created with the liposuction cannula while the attached suction device removes redundant fat.. Final results of neck liposuction will generally be seen approximately 6 weeks following the procedure and can take up to 6 months for final results..

Post Neck Liposuction Recovery

After the surgery, you may have to cover the treatment area with elastic bandages. These will not only help to press the skin against your new jawline to help it to reattach, but they will also help prevent swelling. In addition, Dr. Solomon may plant some temporary drains around the incisions if he feels that blood or fluid needs to be drained.

Aftercare Instructions

You will also be sent home with detailed instructions on how to care for yourself and the surgical site. These instructions will not only include how to take care of the incision site, but also what medications you should take. Our registered nurse will review this list with you so that you are aware of any possible side effects or any complications to look out for, and when to schedule a follow-up visit with Dr. Solomon. Our team of professionals will assist you in your care and answer all your concerns during the recovery process.

Recovery Procedure

After your stitches have been removed, about 10 days after surgery, you’ll want to relax for about a month so your body can completely heal. You’ll have to wait for the swelling to go down in order to see any results. Once the swelling does go down, you should be able to see your new contours start to appear. While you may see the swelling go down after a couple weeks, please keep in mind that it may take months for the swelling to completely subside.

After your neck liposuction, you may feel anxious, or emotional as your body is healing. This is perfectly normal after cosmetic surgery. The good news is, that as your body heals and the results of the neck liposuction procedure become visible, you will start to not only feel better about yourself but look better too.

Payment Plans

Dr. Solomon offers a variety of payment options in order to allow patients to focus on their recovery and enjoy their new facial appearance. If you are interested in getting neck liposuction, please contact us for more information. You can schedule a no obligation consultation upon request, so that any needs or concerns you may have, medical or otherwise, can be discussed at the most convenient time for you and with ardent confidentiality.
