In general, Neck Liposuction is one of the safer cosmetic procedures.
The risks of serious complications are very rare, such as facial nerve damage, which would result in temporary weakness to lower lip movement. Furthermore, the chance of nerve injury is very low as Dr. Solomon is an experienced facial plastic surgeon. In order to ensure patient safety and optimal results, Dr. Solomon uses a blunt cannula for suctioning. This allows him to effectively extract excess fat from the neck region. This technique also minimizes vascular injury and reduces the risk of hematoma formation. However, the most common side effects include swelling and inflammation around the treated area, which are the same as you would receive from most other cosmetic surgeries.
The Procedure
Neck liposuction is useful to remove fatty tissue from the neck. It is applied to fat that does not respond to diet and exercise. We like to think that diet and exercise can help every area. However, the reality is that the body sometimes believes fatty tissue belongs in areas where it doesn’t, and will fight to keep that fat there. In Toronto, Dr. Solomon head and neck surgeon performs neck liposuction as an outpatient procedure under general anesthetic. Even better, it typically takes about an hour to perform. Dr. Solomon injects the area with saline and epinephrine to minimize bleeding and to prepare fat for extraction. Specifically, he makes two small incisions, one located beneath each earlobe, and possibly a third beneath the chin. Even more, Dr. Solomon uses a specialized tube to remove the fat from the neck region.
Swelling and Bruising
Any surgical procedure will cause swelling. The suctioning action may also rupture small blood vessels, causing bruising. Both swelling and bruising will be around the area of the incisions. The swelling and bruising will likely not be noticeable after 2-3 weeks. Any tenderness and internal healing will likely be over after around 6 weeks. Your body will adjust to the new tissues over time. Your neck will look most natural and attractive after about 6 months.
Accelerating the Healing Process
Typically patients that undergo neck liposuction should wear a tensor bandage around the neck for the first week and continue to where it while sleeping for a few weeks. This will help to reduce swelling and improve healing. As with other surgeries, adequate rest and plenty of water are the keys to getting better faster. A good diet with plenty of vitamins, minerals, and protein will also help your body recover. Avoid any heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for 4-6 weeks. Sutures are removed after one week and instructions will be provided on how to care for the incisions to avoid scarring.
