As we age, our faces can lose some volume, that youthful plumpness that keeps facial contours smooth and supple. Wrinkles may also start to appear when collagen and elastin fibres in the skin break down from years of squinting, frowning and smiling.
Collagen and hyaluronic acids like Restylane and Juvéderm are popular injectable fillers. They are terrific for adding volume, but as results typically last only about year, treatment over time can be expensive. There are longer lasting fillers, but they are becoming less available in Canada due to safety concerns.
What is fat transfer?
Fat transfer, also known as fat grafting, gives a larger volumizing effect and longer lasting results than injectable fillers. Celebrities like Madonna, Kate Goselin and Megan Fox are reported to have used fat grafting to restore facial fullness and reverse signs of aging.
Fat transfer involves taking fat cells from another area of the body, like your abdomen and injecting them into an area on your face to restore volume. Since the fat cells are from your own body, no allergic reaction is possible.
Dr. Solomon says, “Fat transfer works well to add volume to lips, restore facial volume in areas like cheeks, chin and lower eyes, and to fill facial wrinkles and frown lines. I have also found great results when fat transfer is done together with Selphyl and lasers to treat acne scars.”
What to expect during a fat grafting procedure.
Fat transfer is performed in Dr. Solomon’s Toronto Facial Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Centre on an outpatient basis using local anesthetic.
First, both the donor site where the fat is to be extracted and the facial target site for injection are frozen. The fat is liposuctioned from the donor site with a small needle attached to a syringe, processed to remove excess fluid and then injected into the face.
How soon will my body recover?
Patients can go home right after the procedure. There may be some moderate pain and swelling but those can both be managed easily with medication.
Most patients find that they need three or four treatments over six months for long-lasting facial rejuvenation, because the body absorbs about 65% of the fat over the first few months. Many feel that fat grafting is an ideal way to rejuvenate their facial appearance as well or better than a surgical facelift.
