The CAFPRS (initially known as the Canadian Institute of Facial Plastic Surgery) was founded in 1981 by academic otolaryngologists (surgical specialists in the head and neck).

Today the Academy has more than sixty members and sponsors academic meetings to promote the development of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery academically and within the community. The Academy also protects the interests of those legitimately practicing facial plastic surgery. All Fellows of the Academy must have certification from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in the field of Otolaryngology or Plastic Surgery, and meet criteria relating to surgical experience and professional standing.
The Academy is recognized throughout Canada by academic departments of Otolaryngology-Head Neck Surgery and the Canadian Society of Otolaryngology-Head Neck Surgery, as well as by associated American medical organizations. The Canadian Academy is the Canadian sister organization to the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
