Despite a slowdown in the economy, the demand for cosmetic surgery continues to soar. It has increased 12% in 2014 from 2013, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). The Facelift is not an exception
There is no research to show that this trend extends to Canada. But, cosmetic surgeons here, like Dr. Philip Solomon, are experiencing a similar upswing, with facelifts in particular.
Why? Active, gorgeous, fit and social baby boomers. This generation bears no connection to their polyester wearing bingo-playing predecessors. However, as they move from the end of their 50s to their 60s and early 70s, the botox and fillers that were the darling of this age group are showing its limitations. Now, there is a distinct shift from fillers back to facelifts.
Fillers “inflate” lines and folds, offering positive short-term effects for younger patients (<40 years). However, frequent applications are necessary to maintain results. It even may appear over filled when used as the only anti-aging tool.
By comparison, Facelifts lift the skin, allowing it to be applied to the entire face and neck.
Even more, it has longer lasting results, followed by minor touch ups years later. However, the combination of fillers with different surgical procedures, like a facelift, is the preferred way for achieving facial rejuvenation. This applies especially for individuals 50 years and older.
Dr. Solomon is one of Canada’s most recognized facial aesthetic surgeons, certified in otolaryngology, head and neck surgery. He practices facial plastic surgery in the Toronto area.
Furthermore, as part of the Teaching Faculty Division of Facial Plastic Surgery at the University of Toronto, he believes there are great benefits for both options. He thinks that the pros and cons for facelift versus filler are worth considering. Especially for those in their late 40s who have a longer time to enjoy the impact of surgery.
