Cosmetic Facial Procedure: Acne Scar Treatment

Acne scars, whether mild or extreme, can leave both physical and emotional scars on an individual. People who were plagued with acne as teenagers and struggled to treat and conceal their condition, are now adults who continue to be challenged with the acne scars left behind. Adults who are afflicted with active acne combined with acne scars, are also looking for solutions so that they can feel more comfortable and confident in their own skin.

Acne scar Treatment is a very common aesthetic procedure at Solomon Facial Plastic. Dr. Philip Solomon, Otolaryngologist, Head and Neck surgeon practicing Facial Plastic Surgery is a renowned surgeon with nearly 20 years of experiencing treating Acne Scars. At the Solomon Aesthetic Facial Plastic Surgery Centre in Thornhill, he dedicates his practice to helping his patients achieve the best possible results.

Boxcar scars resemble Ice-pick scars in that they have angled and sharp edges however they are wider and more oval shaped. They commonly appear on the cheeks and neck.

Types of Acne Scars

There are 4 different types of Acne Scars:

  • Ice-pick scars
  • Boxcar scars
  • Rolling scars
  • Raised scars / Hypertrophic

Depressed acne scars include Boxcar, Rolling and Ice-pick scars. Depressed acne scars form when acne begins to clear up and the skin begins to heal however the body doesn’t produce enough collagen to replace the damaged tissue

Ice-pick scars can present like large open pores. Ice-pick scars are small, narrow scars that run deep beneath the surface of the skin, appearing as though the skin has been punctured by an ice-pick.

Solomon Facial Plastic

At Solomon Facial Plastic, we treat all types of acne scars using multi-modality therapy. Subcision, Bellafill, Excision/Punch Excision, CO2 Laser Resurfacing/Erbium, Fractora and PRP Injections are among the many procedure options Dr. Solomon utilizes in his personalized treatment plans.

It’s very important that acne scar patients keep in mind that their treatment plan may incorporate more than one procedure type and several sessions in order to optimize their results. Removing scars completely is often the patients’ goal however it’s important that patients set realistic goals and seek improvement of their scars, and appreciate subtle improvements over time.

Unfortunately, acne scars can be somewhat permanent as they never completely disappear, however a vast improvement can be achieved with a well-executed treatment plan that can take time. Dr. Solomon takes great pride in his commitment to his acne scar patients to ensure they attain the best results.

Subcision With Bellafill

Subcision is a minor surgical procedure, using a needle to puncture the surface of the skin, in order stimulate the tissue beneath the scars. In doing so, it helps release and elevate the scars. Bellafill, a semi-permanent filler that is Health Canada approved for the purpose of acne scar treatment, is then injected into the treatment area to help add volume.

In using Bellafill, patients can see immediate improvement following their injection. In time, Bellafill helps with the production of collagen that can further help the acne scars fade over time. Subcision can be done in isolation as well.

Excision/Punch Excision

Excision, also known as Punch Excision, is a minor surgical procedure used to treat depressed acne scars. Excision is performed using a circular blade attached to a pen-like handle. The blade is rotated down through superficial and deeper tissues of the skin, into the subcutaneous fat. The root of the acne scar is then extracted and the circular incision area is sutured close. The sutures are then removed one week following treatment.

PRP Injections

PRP Injections in combination with other treatments can also be effective in helping treat acne scars. Platelet Rich Plasma Injections involve the injection of the patient’s own platelets and fibrin to stimulate the regrowth of collagen and elastin. Once your blood is injected back into your skin, a natural healing process begins that helps reduce the presence of the acne scars.

Rolling scars are even wider than Boxcar scars but have a softer edge, a more rounded appearance and present a wave like appearance across the skin. Rolling scars often develop on people who have endured long-term acne.

Raised scars are also known as hypertrophic scars. Raised scars form when there is an abundance of collagen fibers that build up over a wound or acne lesion and can appear thick and lumpy.

Fractora

Fractora is one of the most advanced technologies used for the treatment of active acne and acne scars available today. Fractora uses a “microneedling” approach as bipolar radio frequency transmits heat into the upper surface of the skin. Fractora is unique in that it can be applied to all skin types.

Light, medium and dark skin tones can be all be treated for acne scars using Fractora’s technology, without causing hyperpigmentation. Traditional laser resurfacing is unable to treat dark skin tones due to the risk of causing hyperpigmentation.

Ultrapulse CO2 Laser Resurfacing

Ultrapulse CO2 Laser Resurfacing is often used for the treatment of acne scars. The fractionated laser accesses the deep layers of the skin using microscopic holes. This method of treatment helps regenerate new, healthy collagen, to smooth out the acne scars. The acne scars will continue to improve gradually for 6 months following the treatment. Patients will require approximately one-week downtime for recovery. In select cases Dr. Solomon may choose to use Erbium Laser Resurfacing as it can be better suited for certain skin types.
