There are two types of African-American patient noses in comparison to those of Caucasians. In this video Dr. Philip Solomon performs an augmentation rhinoplasty on an African-American, guiding us through the surgical procedure. He begins by showing the fibril fatty tissue of the patient's nose and how it each side is trimmed before using sutures to further narrow the dome. This is not enough to provide the desired effect and is not necessary in all cases; it will depend on the shape of the patient’s nose as well as their desired results.

He also removes a large graft of cartilage in order to add more support to the region affected and help to create the desired shape.  Finally, he uses a gortex augmentation block  fed into position through the nostril  to support the bridge of the nose. This is necessary because the patient has a particularly low bridge. He also discusses the natural shape of the African-American nose and how it is enhanced to create a beautiful and natural nose.
