Based on the many years of experience we have with patients who undergo rhinoplasty procedures, we have consistently found that our patient’s mental preparation is essential for a positive cosmetic surgery experience. At the Solomon Nasal and Facial Plastic Surgery Centre, we have a team of professionals dedicated to ensuring that our patients make well-informed decisions and feel prepared for their procedure.

Relaxation Techniques

It is natural for patients to experience anxiety prior to their surgery. This may present with symptoms such as difficulty sleeping, irritability or panic attacks. To cope with the stress, we suggest our clients try the some techniques prior to surgery. These relaxation techniques can help an individual cope with stress. Not all activities listed are appropriate for everyone. So, it is important to choose a technique that you particularly enjoy. Avoid the energy intensive relaxation techniques soon after surgery to avoid physical stress on the body. Selecting a surgeon who you feel comfortable with can also greatly reduce anxiety.

  • Yoga, Meditation, Tai Chi
  • Deep breathing exercises and squeezing stress balls
  • Wear loose, comfortable attire
  • Treat yourself to a massage or spa
  • Support networks
  • Quality time with family
  • Visualization

Visualization

Visualization is a relaxing technique where the client imagines about the procedure that they are about to undergo. They start off by visualizing themselves being calm and confident on the day of the surgery. They will then imagine themselves successfully undergoing the surgery and recovering from the procedure over the next couple of weeks with a successful result. This technique allows the client to mentally prepare for what they are about to experience on the day of the surgery, and prepare themselves emotionally.

Educating Yourself

It is important for our clients to have realistic expectations and be aware of the limitations of the surgery. It can take a number of weeks for the incisions to heal and many months for scars and swelling to fade. The final outcome can sometimes take up to one year to achieve. Your surgeon will discuss the swelling and bruising which are normal in the immediate post op period as well as the long-term patience you will require to wait for the last degree of residual swelling to finally leave. Cold compresses with pain medications will provide symptomatic relief. You should make it a habit to sleep on your back and avoid using glasses to avoid unnecessary pressure onto your nose. Ask your surgeon ahead of time what your follow up appointment schedule will be like, when your splint or bandages will be removed, and when you can resume certain activities. On the day of discharge, be sure to have someone present, to assist your transportation and some additional help at home, as you may be drowsy from the medication. Be sure to get plenty of rest to allow your body to heal.
At the Solomon Nasal and Facial Plastic Surgery Centre, we find that well-informed patients have an easier time with the recovery phase.
