I still have concerns about my rhinoplasty. Can you help?

Posted in Cosmetic Surgery Questions | Posted By - Dr. Solomon

Patient Question:

I had Rhinoplasty Surgery last year. I still have concerns regarding the appearance of my nose. I feel my nose is still thick and the tip hangs down too much. The bridge does not feel smooth. I also have trouble breathing now. Here are photos for you to look at. Please let me know if you think you can help.

Dr. Solomon’s Answer:

Your photos indicate that you appear to have thick nasal skin. You also have what is called a polybeak deformity and collapse of the middle vault of your nose. Your nasal tip is still bulky but this may be related to the lack of strength to the nasal tip. If you want to come in for a consult we can evaluate you thoroughly and determine if revision surgery is something you wish to consider. Breathing tests also may help determine what is contributing to your nasal congestion since your prior rhinoplasty. Please see our site information on revision rhinoplasty to view some of our revision rhinoplasty photos. You will see similar cases to yours and some examples of what can be accomplished with revision rhinoplasty surgery.

Tell me about the risks involved in gortex rhinoplasty.

Posted in Cosmetic Surgery Questions | Posted By - Dr. Solomon

Patient Question:

Can you tell me about gortex use in rhinoplasty surgery and what are the risks associated with it?

Dr. Solomon’s Answer:

Gortex implants known as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) have been used extensively in a variety of surgical procedures for years. Its use in rhinoplasty date back over 20 years. Gortex is used in rhinoplasty as an alternative to cartilage grafts. It can be used to build up areas of the nose or to camouflage areas of asymmetry or irregularity possibly resulting from prior nasal surgery or trauma. In rhinoplasty cases where building of the nose is required patients will be offered both cartilage grafts and gortex implants. The advantages and disadvantages of grafts and gortex will be outlined to each patient on a case by case basis. The biggest risk of gortex use is infection or extrusion of the implant which is felt to be between one and three percent incidence.

Dr. Solomon writes on male rhinoplasty surgery for Revive Magazine.

More and more men are getting their noses altered in an effort to improve their appearance. In years past, this type of plastic surgery would have been the province of women. However, given the improvements in rhinoplasty, the lure of a perfect nose has become well accepted by the male gender. As such, Otolaryngologist-Facial Plastic Surgeons, Plastic Surgeons and Maxillofacial Surgeons have started tailoring some of their procedures towards the male populace. With the recession and increasingly competitive workforce Males look to cosmetic surgery to look younger and better. Rhinoplasty being one of the commonest cosmetic surgical enhancements has become increasingly sought out by men of different ages, ethnicities and socioeconomic status.
